Triangle Lake School: Small School, Big SuccessesMay 22, 2013 Comments (0)
Triangle Lake Charter School is one of Oregon’s small rural schools, located in the town of Blachly, Oregon. Three years ago, Triangle Lake became a charter school with the hope of boosting enrollment and preserving the community’s pride in this great neighborhood hub. As a charter school, Triangle Lake boasts small class sizes with a total enrollment of approximately 200 children from kindergarten to 12th grade. While small, Triangle Lake has a tradition of keeping kids active through sports. At the prompting of a local parent, the athletic director agreed to add wrestling to the sports line up in 2010.
At the time, the coach was a volunteer, and minimal funds were available to help establish this new sport. Despite a practice mat that dated back to the 1960’s and polyester wrestling uniforms, a group of students formed a team. As with any new sport, there is always a learning curve, and athletes celebrate even the smallest of victories. In the first two years, Triangle Lake had no district champions or state qualifiers, but the athletes grew in their knowledge and skills and were dedicated to achieving an even better year in 2012. Throughout the 2011-2012 season the booster club helped raise funds for updated uniforms for the team. The hiring of an additional coach helped boost the team as well. Every penny spent on this sport by the athletic director had to be reserved for entry fees and travel expenses, so the booster club stepped in to purchase updated uniforms and workout gear.
In 2012-2013 the team had ten athletes. Many of which were from previous years along with a few new Freshman. Looking to create a name for themselves among the other schools, The Lakers started the year with intense practices and a huge dose of heart. Wins came more frequently and ultimately nine out of the ten athletes, two of which were girls, placed in the top four at districts. Of those that placed in district, two qualified for the state completion. In just three years of the program, February of this year, Triangle Lake was pleased to have its first wrestler place at state, when Tayler D. knocked off the 3rd seated wrestler bringing home the bronze metal in the 152 weight class. Tayler became the first wrestler in the history of Triangle Lake to compete at the state level and to place.
Triangle Lake has seen great success this year throughout its athletics program, including state firsts for football, volleyball, both basketball teams and wrestling. Many of the track athletes are expected to compete and state as well.
In a time when many schools are cutting extracurricular activities, Triangle Lake has found a way to bring community together on all levels to build a better school, programs and education experience for students in the area.
Each year, the Triangle Lake High School Booster Club hosts a BBQ chicken feed and auction. The booster club raises money so that it can help support athletics through the purchasing of equipment, uniforms, helping with coaching stipends, and addressing other needs. The auction has been happening for 33 years now. This is the primary source of funding for the Booster Club, and is a beloved event that the entire community turns out for. In 2013, more than $19,000 was raised with the support of local donors such as Ninkasi, to help keep athletics flourishing in a time when other schools are cutting sports. The Booster Club plays a critical role in not only helping to fund athletics, but also to help see new sports like wrestling grow into a place where athletes can attain great results. At Triangle Lake, everyone who wants to play a sport is given the opportunity to participate regardless of skill level.
We are proud to partner with this great school and look forward to seeing these programs develop!
