Beer is Love Partner Highlight: Association of Women in AutomotiveNov 07, 2013 Comments (0)
Betty Kendall was the first woman to gain the Automotive Service Excellence Master Technician certificate. She accomplished this impressive feat back in 1975 and went on to be a professor in automotive at Portland Community College. While teaching, it was not unusual for her to have a classroom full of only male students. It was also not unusual for one of these men to raise their hand and ask her “what is a woman doing teaching automotive?”
Luckily, Betty did not let this chase her away from the automotive industry. Instead, she used it as fuel to start the Association of Women in Automotive along with Anna Hay. This awesome organization has spent the last two decades providing education through workshops, career fairs, and merit badge classes, training through car clinics and workshops to improve the practice and image of the automotive industry, and supportto other women in the automotive field through help with job placement and mentoring young women in the field. One of theother super stellar ways they offer support is through annual scholarships.
Because we think these women are doing absolutely amazing things, we’ve thrown our support behind their support for the last few years and provided a (delicious) donation through our Beer is Loveprogram to their annual Oktoberfest Celebration to raise money for their scholarship program. Al attended the event for Team Ninkasi this year and can’t stop raving about what an inspirational group of women that she got to spend the evening with- eating good food, listening to good music, and of course, drinking good beer!
One of last year's scholarship recipients even joined the band to play the banjo! Talk about a woman of many talents!
A big thanks to the AWA for continuing to partner with our company. We love what you're doing for women in automotive! To check out more about this amazing group, visit their website at: http://awapdx.blogspot.com/
