Team Total Domination: Getting Race Ready!Aug 22, 2014 Comments (0)
It's time for another checkin with Barret, our Team Total Domination all-star who’s gearing up to compete at the 2014 Long Distance Duathlon World Championships in Zofingen, Switzerland this September as a part of Team Total Domination! Last time we chatted with him, he was kicking ass and taking names during one of his biggest weeks of training. This week, our duathlete is starting to rest since the race is getting closer!
Ninkasi: So...fill us in! How's training for the big race going?
Barret: Honestly, this week was a pretty boring week. I did a big workout on Sunday and it showed me that I probably should've started my recovery time a little earlier. I was definitely pretty tired going into the first run and my ride started off slow but I found my legs in the second half. So that was nice. I ended up cutting the second run short because I realized it was just causing more harm than good. So now I'm ready to start my taper into the race! Clearly I need it. But it was REALLY great to get on my mountain bike for a bit!
Ninkasi: What does taper look like for you?
Barret: For the most part, I like to take my recovery weeks pretty slow and really back off the volume as I tend to go harder than I should during my on weeks. I could probably use more sleep at night, but that's hard to get! I got in one weightlifting session and then one three hour ride today. During today's three hour ride I felt pretty good and it seems like my power is coming back.
Ninkasi: Does having a recovery week mean you actually have time to squeeze in some fun?
Barret: Actually, yes! Tomorrow we will go out to Wilmington, North Carolina and hang out on the beach to get some much-needed R&R. Maybe even have some margaritas! It's getting really hot and humid here which is making me totally fine with not training as much! I'm pretty done with the summer.
Ninkasi: That's understandable. What will the weather be like in Switzerland for race day?
Barret: Considerably cooler. Which will be nice! I just can't wait to get on that plane! Thanks for checking in and keep the rubber side down! Ride and play hard and make sure to drink your beer!
Ninkasi: Cheers to that!
