Beer is Love Partner Spotlight: Sierra Avalanche Center

Mar 16, 2015 Comments (0) Beer is Love Partner Spotlight: Sierra Avalanche Center

In the beginning of February, our Beer is Love program donated beer to the Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC) in Reno, Nevada for their "Backcountry Basics" event. SAC works hard to inform and educate people in the Lake Tahoe area about backcountry avalanche conditions. The "Backcountry Basics" event last month was part of a series to educate and raise awareness about avalanches. It was held at Patagonia and it was a great turn out! Danny from Patagonia filled us in on all of the fun.

The event was a great success! It was a rainy night here in Reno, but that didn't stop the backcountry core from coming out to the Patagonia Outlet to enjoy a great night of avalanche awareness and preparation. The Sierra Avalanche Center provided a thorough presentation, going over the basics of how avalanches occur, which terrains should be avoided, and the importance of incorporating planning and teamwork into touring the backcountry. The presentation couldn't have come at a better time, as the mountains surrounding Reno and Tahoe were getting dumped on as the event took place.

The folks from SAC provide a great service to our region, with avalanche forecasts that help keep us all safe out on the slopes. Following the Backcountry Basics presentation, SAC staffers fielded questions from those in attendance and gave valuable insight into how they create forecasts and promote avalanche safety. They also provided information about further training available nearby.

Local badass Dave Nettles took the floor after SAC wrapped up and presented an amazing slideshow of his adventures in the backcountry all over the world! The photos were breathtaking and his stories were equally as impressive. To round out the night, SAC, Tahoe Mountain Sports, and Patagonia furnished a raffle, with many folks leaving with prizes that were worth far more than the $10 donation required to obtain a ticket.

Just fewer than 50 people were on hand for the presentation, which included a generous donation of Expo 58 from Ninkasi and samples of Patagonia's wild-caught salmon. It was a great event for our community and it was nice to see so many outstanding organizations getting involved to benefit our friends at the Sierra Avalanche Center.

It was a blast to support SAC and their awesome event. We highly recommend checking out our Beer is Love partner the Sierra Avalanche Center to find out more about the great ways they're Perpetuating Better Living around Lake Tahoe. Cheers!
