Ninkasi and Steelhead Partner for KLCC BrewfestFeb 10, 2017 Comments (0)
The KLCC Brewfest is the oldest and largest brewfest in Eugene, with 85 breweries participating and over 175 beers and ciders availiable for tastings. There will be live music, home brewing competitions, record and CD sales, collaborations beers and more. This event brings the community together every year and celebrates the craft beer community, while donating all proceeds to KLCC 89.7 FM.
An exciting aspect of this festival is the collaboration beers that are brewed specifically for the festival. Each year, participating breweries get randomly selected to collaborate on a beer together. This year, Ninkasi got paired with McKenzie Brewing, the partner brewery of popular Eugene restaurant and brewery, Steelhead. Since it’s the golden anniversary of the NPR affiliate station, the brewers were asked to craft something with that theme in mind.
Ninkasi’s founding brewer Jamie Floyd worked at Steelhead for 11 years prior to starting Ninkasi. He was the kitchen manager and assistant brewer which eventually led him to becoming the head brewer. His experience at Steelhead and Ninkasi make up over 20 years of brewing experience, dating back to 1995. When talking about the collaboration beer Floyd stated, “it was actually pretty cool. It was fun to go back.” Jamie did his first collaboration beer in 1995, and has been very involved since the beginning. “It is one of the cooler parts of this festival,” Floyd said.
“When we got together to brew, we didn’t over-think it too much, we just made a beer that fit the golden theme,” Floyd said. The final product was Guskin, a Pale Ale using golden oats and a band of centennial and Idaho 7 hops. The beer has a solid body with a heavy late addition of hops at 5.4% ABV. Lemon, dark aromas, red currents, and citrus notes are present in the beer and will be available to taste at the Ninkasi Tasting Room, Steelhead, and the KLCC Brewfest.
